Origen - Commentary on Proverbs

Chapter 10

CHAPTER 10

Verse 6.[212] “The blessing of the Lord is on the head of a righteous person, but the mouth of the ungodly covers untimely grief. Verse 7.[213] The memory of the righteous is with praise, but the name of the ungodly is extinguished. Verse 8.[214] One wise in heart will receive commands, but the unconfined one who perverts lips will be overthrown. Verse 9.[215] He who walks about simply, walks about confidently, but he who perverts his ways, will be made known.”

For an intelligent righteous person, even difficult matters become easy; but for the person of opposite character, even those things that are easy and bring relief are made difficult.—Understanding and knowledge are in the principal part [of the soul] itself— When a word concerning a righteous person is brought into the midst [of the assembly], this person is praised, but the name of the ungodly perishes; being unstable, it will fall. He calls “wise,” therefore, the person who has something from nature, but “unconfined in lips” [he calls] the person who does not understand, “You have heard a word?, let it die with you” [216]. Or, he who says something at one time, and something else at another time, will fall. The person who devises nothing evil for his neighbor, neither will he receive a plot from someone else. But he who plots secretly, and yet praises one to their face, he will be made known, even if he seems to escape notice until a later time. Or, in the same way the double-minded and complex person is refuted, but the demonstration of the truth is a refutation of the matter; the double-minded and unstable person will be reproved, will be condemned.[49]

Verse 22.[217] “This [blessing] enriches.” If each person who is blessed by the Lord is rich, and those who walk in the Law of the Lord are blessed by the Lord, and the prophets walked in the Law of the Lord, then they were rich. In laughter a fool practices evil things [218]: while practicing evil things, he is pleased and rejoices. But wisdom gives birth to prudence for a man [219], a practical virtue. (PG)

Εach person who is blessed by the Lord is rich, and those who walk in the Law of the Lord, the prophets, these namely were rich. The wealth that is given from the blessing of Christ is supplied unmixed with any grief [220], gladdening souls rather than sense-perception. He is pleased when practicing evil things, this person who says many things, but does not relate the things needful. (Pitra)
