Origen - Commentary on Proverbs

Chapter 23

CHAPTER 23

Verses 1-2.[228] “If you sit to dine at the table of α ruler, consider carefully the things that are set before you. And extend your hand, knowing that you will need to prepare such things.” The “table of a ruler” is the words of the prophets; he who hears them should indeed ascend from the literal history to contemplation, in such a way they are caught up [from one to the other]. Do not stand, it says, before the thing alone, nor be content with the first nourishment, for the text is referring to “dining at the chief meal,” not “eating at midday.” Do not inquire only so far as what is historical, [but] so far as what is intelligible. For with the table of a ruler at hand, do seek to be fed not with what is of low estate, nor with what is earthy, but rather with what is spiritual and heavenly.
