Origen - Commentary on Proverbs

Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4

Verse 25.[196] “Let your eyes see straight.” Those who have impassible thoughts and true teachings “see straight.” When it says, “Let your eyes see straight,” it indicates the vision of the soul. And when it urges, “Eat honey, son, in order that your throat may be sweetened” [197], he is figuratively calling the divine teaching “honey,” which supplies the spiritual knowledge. But wisdom also touches the soul: for “Love her, in order that she may embrace you” [198]. A soul, being united to wisdom through an interweaving, is filled with holiness and purity. Hereafter surely the soul’s sense of smell attains to the perfumes of Christ.[44]
